## Key points

- Gibsons apologised for its Harry Potter Halloween display.
- Online criticism focused on JK Rowling’s public statements.
- At least 200 divided comments were reported before comments closed.

## Summary

Gibsons, a town in British Columbia, apologised after a Harry Potter-themed Halloween display drew criticism online. The episode highlights how public statements by the series’ author, JK Rowling, have made the franchise a sensitive subject for some transgender people and others.

The town said the display was intended as a fun seasonal attraction, but recognised that it carried different meanings and apologised to those who felt hurt. It disabled comments on its original post; Canadian outlet Daily Hive reported at least 200 comments expressing divided views before that happened. The town said it would consider the feedback when planning future displays and activities.
