Nirmeen Noufl, a 55-year-old woman from Sydney, has been sentenced to a minimum of three years imprisonment for killing her husband Mamdouh in what she claimed was excessive self-defence whilst being physically assaulted and choked. Following the killing, she dismembered his body using a saw and disposed of it in multiple rubbish bags across southwest Sydney; his remains were never recovered. The sentence has sparked outrage amongst the victim's family, particularly his nephew, who contends the punishment is inadequate and called for a significantly longer custodial term.

The judge imposed a total sentence of six years and nine months, taking into account Noufl's history of extreme domestic abuse, psychological manipulation and coercive control within the marriage, as well as a traumatic childhood. The Crown accepted her plea to excessive self-defence rather than pursuing a murder charge, partly because the disposal of the body prevented rigorous testing of her account of events. With time already served, Noufl will become eligible for parole in October 2027. The victim's family dispute this framing of events, with impact statements characterising him as a kind-hearted individual, though the court found evidence that he held controlling views and had denied his wife's request for a divorce just days before his death.
