Women’s Super League 2026-27 preview No 1: Arsenal

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Arsenal begin the 2026-27 Women's Super League season with a heavily reshaped squad, following a trophyless campaign that left the club hungry for silverware. Eleven players have departed, including club legends Beth Mead and Katie McCabe, who have moved to Manchester City and Chelsea respectively, while seven new signings arrive, among them Spain full-back Ona Batlle, England midfielder Georgia Stanway, Switzerland's Géraldine Reuteler and German forward Selina Cerci. The overhaul gives manager Renée Slegers her first full pre-season in charge and a chance to shape the team in her own image, with the club explicitly targeting a first league title in seven years.

Arsenal finished second last season and have qualified directly for the Champions League league phase, avoiding the slow starts that hampered previous campaigns. Off the pitch, the club's revenue rose by £6.5m to £21.5m for the year to May 2025, with matchday income boosted by average attendances above 34,000, though Arsenal remain heavily reliant on funding from their parent club, which supplied over half of overall income. Technical director Jodie Taylor said winning the league is the club's "huge ambition" this season, with Stanway highlighted as the standout signing for the physicality and steel she adds to midfield.
