## Key points

- Unions want higher pay and better school conditions.
- Organisers expect demonstrations in 260 towns and cities.

## Summary

Workers across France have struck and taken to the streets over pay, living costs and public services, with demonstrations expected in hundreds of towns and cities. The protests have grown from a student movement and come months before France’s presidential election, in which Emmanuel Macron cannot stand again.

Unions are calling for a higher minimum wage, increased salaries, tax reforms and better conditions in schools. Organisers expect protests in 260 places, while the Education Ministry estimates 16 per cent of teachers will strike; Reuters reported that riot police fired tear gas in Lyon. The demonstrations follow weeks of unrest over living standards, alongside allegations of police violence, and the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting was moved from Marseille to Paris.
