Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens is being backed by team-mate Tom Heaton to grow stronger after a costly error at the World Cup, where he made a rare error that helped hand Spain a quarter-final win over Belgium. Lammens had been Thibaut Courtois's understudy for the whole tournament, only being called into action after the veteran was injured late on, and his mistake sparked criticism at home, though it has not dented confidence in him at United.

Lammens, 24, spilled a shot from Pau Cubarsi in the closing stages, allowing Arsenal's Mikel Merino to score and give Spain a 2-1 victory. Heaton, who spoke to the youngster afterwards, said such moments are part of a goalkeeper's life and backed his mentality to cope. Lammens, signed from Royal Antwerp for £18.1m ahead of Emiliano Martinez last year, is on a three-week break before returning to training in early August, with United's 8 August friendly against Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg a possible comeback point.
