King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and once recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died aged 34. He became king at three after his father’s death and later underwent a formal coronation at 18; his death is a major cultural loss for Tooro, whose monarch has influence but no formal political power.

The kingdom did not give a cause of death, although local reports said he had been critically ill and seeking treatment in the United States. King Oyo ruled over more than two million people and promoted youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/Aids awareness; officials say he leaves a prince as heir, whose identity will be announced under Tooro custom.
