The Women's Super League has opened an investigation after Crystal Palace made four separate substitutions during their 1-0 win over Everton, exceeding the maximum of three permitted opportunities. The breach matters because it raises questions over compliance with league regulations and could carry sporting consequences for Palace, whose victory was secured by a Lexi Lloyd-Smith goal in Sunday's match at the Borough Sports Ground.

Palace made changes in the 62nd, 83rd, 90th and 97th minutes, one more than the WSL's rules allow. The league says the probe will involve both clubs and referees' body Pro Ref, and while there is no automatic penalty for such a breach, cases can be referred to an independent tribunal with powers ranging from a warning or fine to a points deduction. Both clubs have been contacted for comment.
