WSL transfer talking points: three things we learned from the data

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

The Women's Super League's summer transfer window has closed ahead of the 2026-27 season, with data revealing three notable trends despite spending remaining tiny compared with the £3.4bn splashed out by Premier League clubs. Arsenal made the biggest financial improvement to their squad, London City Lionesses signed marquee talent including Alexia Putellas, and clubs generally showed a stronger focus on retaining stability and completing deals early compared with the chaotic Premier League deadline day.

Arsenal's new signings carry a combined market value of €3.9m, narrowly ahead of London City's €3.5m, with both figures exceeding the entire squad value of eight of the WSL's 14 clubs. West Ham arguably improved most relatively, adding €1.02m in value against €0.96m of retained talent, having lost 29% of their playing minutes including goalkeeper Kinga Szemik. Aston Villa lost the highest proportion of goal contributions (36.2%) via departures such as Kirsty Hanson, while the WSL had completed its transfer business a month before deadline day, in contrast to the Premier League, which had only finished 83% of its eventual signings by the time deadline day began, despite global women's football transfer spending rising 83.6% year-on-year.
