X-Men ‘97 Morph actor reveals the scope of the shapeshifter’s powers and talks romance
JP Karliak, who voices the shapeshifting mutant Morph in Marvel's *X-Men '97*, has explained the character's revamped powers and addressed fan speculation about a possible romance with Wolverine. Morph was almost entirely reimagined for the Disney Plus revival, becoming nonbinary and gaining a new bald, blank-faced appearance inspired by later comic-book depictions, a departure from the character's brief, jokey role in the original 1990s animated series.
Karliak told Polygon that producer Jake Castorena clarified Morph can only replicate powers that are "physical in nature", such as the Hulk's strength or Angel's flight, but not telepathic or psionic abilities, though a future "secondary mutation" could expand this. He also addressed the moment in season one when Morph, transformed into Jean Grey, tells an injured Wolverine "I love you", saying he personally read it as a gesture of comfort rather than a romantic confession, contrary to former showrunner Beau DeMayo's stated interpretation.
