Chinese President Xi Jinping’s two-and-a-half-day state visit to Washington is due to conclude with a symbolic visit to the National Archives alongside President Donald Trump and their wives. The stop, featuring historical documents linked to US-China relations, follows high-level talks held amid tensions over trade, technology, human rights and security.

The summit included military honours, bilateral discussions, Oval Office talks and a state dinner attended by senior officials and business leaders. Expected topics included tariff reductions, rare-earth exports, export controls and fentanyl precursor chemicals; Xi also announced that China would send two giant pandas to Atlanta and invite 100,000 young Americans to China over five years, while protests outside the White House called for freedom in Hong Kong and for Chinese political prisoners.
