Matthew McConaughey's long-delayed neo-Western The Rivals of Amziah King is finally due for release, arriving in select US cinemas on 14 August before expanding wider on 21 August. Written and directed by Andrew Patterson, the film has been well received since premiering at SXSW last year, and it comes ahead of McConaughey's return to television alongside his True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson in the Apple TV series Brothers, out on 23 September.

The Rivals of Amziah King earned a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its March SXSW premiere, with critics singling out McConaughey's performance as among the strongest of his career, fuelling talk of a potential awards push. The ensemble cast includes Kurt Russell, Tony Revelori, Owen Teague, Rob Morgan, Scott Shepherd, Angelina LookingGlass, Cole Sprouse and Catherine Dyer. The release caps a quieter period for McConaughey, who took a lengthy break from leading roles after 2019's The Gentlemen before returning in 2025's The Lost Bus, and it sets the stage for Brothers, on which he and Harrelson also serve as writers and producers.
