York come from behind to beat Hull

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

York Knights came from behind to beat Hull FC 20-16 in the Betfred Super League, securing a third consecutive league victory for the first time in the club's history. Trailing 16-8 at half-time, Mark Applegarth's side rallied to claim their sixth win of the campaign, moving up to ninth in the table and leapfrogging Hull, whose poor away form continued. The result added to a bleak season for the Black and Whites, currently under interim head coach Andy Last while they await the arrival of Steve McNamara.

York scored the opening two tries through David Nofoaluma and Jon Bennison to lead 8-0, before Hull hit back with three tries in 12 minutes from Aidan Sezer, Tom Briscoe and Joe Batchelor, with Zak Hardaker converting twice. The Knights responded after the break with tries from Denive Balmforth and Nikau Williams, aided by Bennison's boot, as Hull's indiscipline told — the visitors conceded six penalties in the first 20 minutes of the second half. York held on late, with veteran hooker Paul McShane producing a crucial covering tackle to dislodge the ball from Herman Ese'ese inches from the line and deny Hull an equaliser.
