Yorkshire Test allocation ‘feels unfair’, says CEO

Yorkshire's chief executive Sanjay Patel has criticised the ECB's allocation of Test matches for 2027, saying Headingley has been treated unfairly. The Leeds ground will miss out on an Ashes Test in 2027 and has no fixture against India in the 2029 tour either, making it the only major English venue without a match in either of the two most prestigious series, a snub that carries significant financial and reputational implications for the club.

Patel said Headingley has now missed out on Ashes cricket in four of the last seven home series and has hosted just two India Tests in the past six series since being upgraded to a minimum of four Tests in 2011. He argued the allocation should reflect Yorkshire's cricketing history, the scale of its recreational game and its finances rather than being decided "through a financial lens", noting the 2025 India Test at Headingley generated the club over £3m in profit. He said Yorkshire, now on a stronger financial footing under a new ten-year strategy, would seek external investment to redevelop the ground and strengthen its case ahead of the next allocation round.
