England and Norway will meet in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup in Miami on Saturday, reviving a rivalry defined less by football than by one legendary piece of radio commentary. The fixture recalls Norway's shock 2-1 win over England in a 1981 World Cup qualifier in Oslo, after which NRK commentator Bjorge Lillelien delivered an ecstatic broadcast that has become one of sport's most quoted moments. It matters now because the two nations are meeting in a major men's tournament for the first time, with stars such as Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland — who has scored seven goals in four games — carrying the modern rivalry.
Lillelien's commentary reeled off British icons from Churchill to Lady Diana before addressing then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher directly with the famous line, "your boys took a hell of a beating." England, boasting players including Bryan Robson, Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegan, had won the earlier qualifier 4-0 at Wembley but still qualified for the 1982 World Cup despite the defeat. Lillelien, who always insisted the words were spontaneous, died in 1987 aged 60. The two men's sides have never met in a major tournament and have not played each other for 12 years, with England having won one, drawn one and lost two of their four competitive meetings.
