Authorities in Argentina have arrested three Chilean men wanted in the United States over their alleged role in a South American theft ring accused of burglarising the homes of professional athletes, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis. The case highlights a growing pattern in which criminal groups use publicly available information, such as travel schedules and social media activity, to identify when high-profile targets are away from home, underscoring the risks that oversharing personal routines online can pose to home security.

Prosecutors say the group tracked athletes' publicly available game schedules and location data, timing break-ins for when victims were travelling or playing matches. Two of the suspects are also linked to a burglary at the Argentine home of former tennis player Juan Martín del Potro. The FBI has separately warned that international theft groups conduct similar surveillance on ordinary homeowners, and it advises against publicising holiday plans on social media, since criminals can research addresses, family details, travel plans and even estimated property values entirely online.
