Maker 3D prints palm-sized mechanical calculator inspired by Curta

The Register · 2 hours ago

YouTuber 3D all Workshop designed and 3D printed a working, palm-sized mechanical calculator inspired by the Curta. The build shows that a complex calculator can be made from plastic filament, though its limited functions and sensitivity to printing imperfections highlight the precision advantages of machined metal.

It uses Leibniz stepped drums, with one drum for each digit, to enter numbers from 1 to 999. It can add and multiply by repeated addition, but cannot subtract or divide because there was not enough room for the extra mechanisms. After about 100 design iterations over two months, the final calculator comprised 109 parts, took 17 hours to print and used 90g of filament; the design has not been released.
