Zack Snyder has released the first trailer for his upcoming action-thriller The Last Photograph, a markedly different project from the comic-book spectacles he is best known for, such as 300, Watchmen and his DC superhero films. Rather than leaning on superpowered action, the teaser emphasises sensory, melancholic imagery, drawing comparisons to Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, though it retains violence central to its revenge-driven plot.

The film follows a former DEA operative, played by Stuart Martin, who returns to the South American mountains to find his missing niece and nephew after their diplomat parents are murdered, aided by a troubled war photographer played by Fra Fee. Snyder directed, shot and wrote the story, with Kurt Johnstad penning the screenplay and Hans Zimmer among the composers; the film is a passion project he has reportedly developed since the mid-2000s. It premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on 13 September.
