## Key points

- Zelensky hopes Democratic control will increase US aid to Ukraine.
- Moscow says it wants Trump to continue peace efforts.
- European officials expect steadier aid but fear greater unpredictability.

## Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hopes a newly Democratic-controlled US Congress will increase support for Kyiv and help bring peace closer by making Russia reconsider continuing the war. The Kremlin said it hopes Donald Trump will continue his efforts to pursue peace, while describing the change in Congress as an internal US matter.

The midterm elections on 3 November gave Democrats control of both the House and Senate, including victories in traditionally Republican states such as Kansas and Texas. Although the president sets US foreign policy, Democrats can use budget decisions to press for more aid to Ukraine and concessions on Trump’s proposals. European officials anticipate steadier military aid but also worry that Trump may turn more attention to international affairs and become less predictable.
