## Key points

- Zelenskyy hopes Democratic control of Congress will bring Ukraine more US aid.
- European leaders want Washington to put greater pressure on Russia.
- US and Russian delegations are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November.

## Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Democratic gains in the US midterm elections give Ukraine hope of receiving more American support. European officials also urged the new Congress to increase pressure on Russia, though some cautioned that the election result may not quickly change President Donald Trump’s approach.

Zelenskyy said Democrats had spoken clearly about supporting Ukraine and restoring ties with Europe, and that financial or military aid could influence Vladimir Putin. The Democrats are due to take control of both chambers of Congress in January, but Trump remains in office for two more years. A US envoy said Ukrainian and Russian delegations were expected to meet in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November to discuss ending the war and security arrangements for Ukraine.
