Divine Lunga escapes Johannesburg shooting after being mistaken for police officer

BBC World · 11 hours ago

Zimbabwean international defender Divine Lunga survived a shooting in Johannesburg's Hillbrow district on Sunday whilst driving with his younger brother. An unknown assailant opened fire on their vehicle, apparently believing Lunga to be an undercover law enforcement officer. South African police confirmed they are investigating the incident as attempted murder, though no arrests have been made.

The 31-year-old has played 21 times for Zimbabwe's national team and currently plays for South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, where he has helped win domestic league titles and the African Champions League in May. Zimbabwe's football association posted a prayer message in support, whilst Lunga's clubs have not publicly commented on the incident. South Africa continues to struggle with high violent crime rates.
