Venezuela Earthquakes Death Toll Surpasses 5,000

HuffPost · 1 month ago

Venezuela continues recovering from two major earthquakes that struck the country last month, with the death toll now confirmed at over 5,000 people. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes that occurred on June 24 have prompted extensive search and recovery operations across affected regions, particularly along the Caribbean coast where La Guaira bore the brunt of the destruction.

The scale of infrastructure damage remains substantial, with authorities documenting 856 damaged structures and 190 buildings that collapsed entirely. Beyond residential areas, widespread damage to bridges, roads, and other public infrastructure has complicated recovery efforts. The government reports that more than 1,300 aftershocks have followed the initial earthquakes, adding to ongoing safety concerns as cleanup and debris-removal operations continue across the affected areas.
