Telstra says a maintenance operation on a network time server triggered widespread disruption to its Australian mobile network, including problems reaching the 000 emergency line, electronic payments and transport systems. The incident matters because incorrect time data caused security checks across the network to reject connections, highlighting weaknesses in the telco’s maintenance controls and resilience planning.

A technician replaced the chassis housing an NTP server shortly before midnight on 7 July, bringing it back online at 3:38am on 8 July; its GPS card then reset the clock to 2006. Telstra said an undocumented earlier design change and an unapplied software update meant staff did not anticipate the behaviour; it isolated the server at 7:11am and had identified affected network components by 10:30am, although some customers had to reboot devices to reconnect.
