Jennifer Finch, bassist, singer and songwriter for pioneering indie-rock band L7, has died aged 59 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her death, confirmed by the band's representative, prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the music world, reflecting the esteem in which she was held on the 1990s alternative rock scene. A GoFundMe set up to support her treatment surpassed its $350,000 target within days, attracting donations from members of Green Day, Pearl Jam and Tool.

Born in Los Angeles in 1966, Finch began as a photographer documenting the early-1980s LA punk scene before taking up bass, playing briefly with Courtney Love in Sugar Baby Doll and joining L7 in 1986. She helped shape the band's sound across albums including 1992's "Bricks Are Heavy", which produced their biggest hit "Pretend We're Dead", before leaving the group in 1996 and continuing to work in other projects. L7 paid tribute on social media, describing her as "a true original who lived entirely on her own terms" and saying they were "shattered by the loss of our beloved bandmate, sister and friend".
