Orlando police intercepted more than 200 pounds of marijuana allegedly brought on commercial flights from Los Angeles in two separate busts this summer. The cases matter because they show how traffickers may try to move drugs through ordinary air travel, although investigators have not established how the marijuana got onto the flights.

Police found 57.6 pounds in vacuum-sealed bags, blankets and dryer sheets on 7 May, then 144.4 pounds in suitcases with locks glued shut on 1 July. The suspects, described as being in their 20s, face felony drug-trafficking charges. A former TSA security director said trafficking can occur on domestic routes and that TSA screens for security threats rather than specifically searching for drugs; suspected narcotics are referred to law enforcement.
