‘Shrimad Bhagavatam’ Anchors Sagar Pictures Entertainment’s Global Push, Indian Studio Confirms (EXCLUSIVE)
Sagar Pictures Entertainment (SPE), the Mumbai-based studio behind Indian TV and film adaptations of ancient epics, has confirmed it is launching a global studio business. The move sees the firm expand beyond film and television production into an intellectual property-led strategy covering gaming, music, consumer products and theme parks, positioning it as a broader entertainment enterprise rather than a traditional content producer.
The venture's anchor project is "Shrimad Bhagavatam", SPE's inaugural feature film franchise, conceived as a seven-chapter theatrical saga for premium large-format screens and currently in production. It is a live-action adaptation of the "Bhagavata Mahapurana", one of Hinduism's eighteen major Puranas, and follows the studio's earlier adaptations of "Ramayana" and the "Mahabharata". SPE traces its roots to the Sagar banner founded in 1954 by Ramanand Sagar, and now operates as the film studio arm of the Sagar Pix Group across Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with a catalogue of more than 55 TV series and 25 feature films reaching over a billion viewers in India and the global Indian diaspora.
