An auction of memorabilia belonging to the late cricket umpire Dickie Bird has raised more than £53,000, with bidders from around the world competing for items charting his decades-long career. The 167 lots, sold at Budds Auctioneers in Wellingborough, were gathered by Bird's family as they cleared his cottage in Barnsley following his death last year, and included caps, shirts, medals, blazers and other items linked to 53 countries.

Among the standout lots were three international caps belonging to Geoff Marsh, Martin Crowe and Joel Garner, which together fetched £16,500, while a weather vane modelled on the one at Lord's sold for £600. Other items, including a scrapbook, autographs and Bird's 2015 honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University, also drew interest, with all lots finding buyers. Bird, who officiated in 66 Tests and 69 one-day internationals, died last year in Barnsley aged 92, having lived there all his life.
