When your vehicle outlives its cloud: What happens next?
As connected cars become the industry standard, drivers face a looming problem: the cloud services powering features like remote start, cabin pre-cooling and automatic crash notification will eventually be switched off, leaving vehicles without capabilities owners have come to rely on. This matters because these systems are now deeply embedded in how modern cars function, and automakers themselves benefit enormously from them, using over-the-air updates to fix bugs and issue recalls across entire fleets rather than repairing cars one at a time.
Connected services trace back to GM's OnStar in the 1990s, and today nearly every major brand offers its own version, including HondaLink, Lexus Enform, FordPass, BMW ConnectedDrive, Volvo On Call and Porsche Connect. These rely on hardware such as a telematics control unit with a cellular modem, SIM or eSIM, and an onboard computer that pushes updates to a vehicle's various electronic control units. While consumers have shown willingness to pay ongoing subscription fees for these conveniences after initial free trial periods, the underlying cloud infrastructure and cellular network support (such as older 3G networks) are not permanent, raising questions about what happens to a car's functionality once its manufacturer withdraws or discontinues that backend support.
