Red Hook Studios has revealed further details of The Fire's Edge, the first piece of downloadable content for the original Darkest Dungeon in several years, confirming it will launch on 18th August to mark the game's 10th anniversary. Newly detailed hero abilities show the studio is building out combat variety rather than simply porting content, with the two heroes borrowed from Darkest Dungeon 2 each filling distinct combat roles. The release is notable given the sequel has proven more divisive with fans than the original, prompting questions about how Red Hook is dividing its attention between the two games.

The DLC adds the Duelist, described as "a complex damage dealer that dances between the party's ranks" by switching between aggressive and defensive stances, and the Runaway, "a position-flexible damage dealer" who introduces a new burn damage mechanic to combat. Trinkets are being reworked with new effects, and three Hamlet districts – Academie Duello, Craftworks and Archaeological Base Camp – are being added alongside the heroes. The original Darkest Dungeon launched on 19th January 2016, and Red Hook has separately teased further Darkest Dungeon 2 DLC for early 2027.
