The small crossed-out wheeled bin icon found on most electronic devices is the official marking of the European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which prohibits electronics from being thrown out with regular household rubbish. It signals that a device must instead be collected separately for proper recycling, reflecting growing global concern over e-waste and the environmental impact of discarded gadgets.

Under EU rules, the WEEE label must combine the crossed-out bin symbol with a product identifier, such as a brand name or logo, and confirmation that the item entered the market after 13 August 2005, when the directive took effect. The symbol appears on a huge range of products, from fridges and washing machines to phones, laptops and toasters, and although it isn't a US legal requirement, it often appears there too because manufacturers make single global product versions; more than 25 US states have their own e-waste laws. This matters because electronics can contain hazardous substances like lead, cadmium and mercury alongside valuable recoverable materials such as rare earth metals and copper, making responsible disposal important for both safety and resource recovery.
