Louisiana Democrat won’t run for reelection after redistricting
Democratic Congressman Cleo Fields has said he will not seek re-election to Louisiana’s 6th District after the state redrew it in a way expected to favour Republicans. His decision ends a likely difficult campaign and illustrates how the Supreme Court’s ruling on the district has reshaped political representation and electoral prospects in Louisiana ahead of the midterm elections.
Fields said he would instead run for a Louisiana state Senate seat. The legislature redrew his formerly majority-Black district in May after the Supreme Court found that its previous design relied too heavily on race; the new district groups largely white areas around Baton Rouge and southern Louisiana. Fields previously served in the US House from 1993 to 1997 before returning to Congress after winning the redrawn seat in 2024.
