Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in talks to join consortium seeking 30% stake in Liverpool
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has held talks about joining a consortium seeking to buy roughly a 30% stake in Liverpool, in what would be his first venture into Premier League ownership. The group, led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia, has made a provisional £1.35bn offer for a stake held by current owners Fenway Sports Group, with any Bezos deal reportedly seeing him take equity in the club. It matters as it signals renewed interest from major global investors in English football's elite clubs and could bring one of the world's richest individuals into the sport.
Bezos, worth around $257bn and the world's fourth-richest person, has previously explored buying NFL franchises the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders without success. The Bhatia-led bid values Liverpool at roughly £4.5bn, higher than Manchester United's valuation when Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a 25% stake two years ago, and Bhatia is understood to have backing from father-in-law and steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. FSG confirmed the consortium has expressed interest in a "strategic minority investment", having already sold 3% of the club to US firm Dynasty Equity in 2023; Bhatia has stepped down from QPR to pursue the Liverpool deal.
