“It started to feel like there wasn’t any stealth”: 007 First Light had to pull Bond’s punches to protect IO Interactive’s specialty sneaking

Rock Paper Shotgun · 4 hours ago

IO Interactive has revealed that its James Bond game, 007 First Light, went through repeated internal rebalancing during development to stop combat from overshadowing the stealth gameplay the studio is known for. Senior combat designer Tom Marcham explained that whenever fighting became too powerful, players simply punched their way through encounters, leaving the stealth systems redundant, forcing the team to repeatedly retune the balance so sneaking, talking and fighting all remained viable options. This matters because First Light is meant to offer a flexible blend of playstyles rather than favouring one approach, echoing the emergent, player-choice design IO built its reputation on with the Hitman series.

Marcham made the comments at a UKIE "For One Night Only" showcase, describing how combat's "overpowered" phases repeatedly pushed stealth "away for a little while" until developers found new ways to challenge players and restore balance. He declined to discuss the game's forthcoming story DLC in detail but confirmed a first post-release gadget, AR glasses based on the real-life Even G2 device, and noted that brands involved in the game's product placement are largely unconcerned about how players misuse their products in-game.
