Labour announce candidate for Barnsley by-election in August
Labour has selected Dan Jarvis as its candidate for the Barnsley Central by-election, following the resignation of the constituency’s former MP, Eric Illsley. The contest matters because it will determine who represents the seat after Illsley stepped down amid the parliamentary expenses scandal.
Jarvis, a former Army officer who served in the Parachute Regiment, was chosen by local Labour members to defend a seat long held by the party. The by-election was scheduled for 3 March 2011, with Labour aiming to retain the constituency despite the circumstances that prompted the vacancy.
