Instagram now lets users swap the music on published posts and carousels
Instagram has introduced a new tool called Replace Audio, allowing users to change the soundtrack on feed posts and carousels after they have already been published, without losing accumulated likes, comments, shares and reach. Previously, altering the music on a published post required deleting it and re-uploading from scratch, resetting all engagement. The update, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on 21 July, gives creators and brands greater flexibility to keep older posts current with trending sounds or updated personal tastes, without sacrificing existing performance metrics.
The feature is accessed via a post's three-dot menu, selecting "Edit" and then choosing a replacement track. It forms part of a broader push by the Meta-owned platform to expand music integration across its app over the past three years, including carousel soundtracks in 2023, a multitrack Reels editing tool in 2024 allowing up to 20 layered tracks, a Spotify save-to-library integration, and song previews in direct messages from February 2025. These features rely on Meta's licensing arrangements with rights holders, including Merlin, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, as the company continues to position audio as a key driver of engagement, particularly amid ongoing competition with TikTok.
