Cricket Australia's chief executive Todd Greenberg has said England and Australia should be open to staging a Test match in India, an idea aimed at boosting interest in the format in a market increasingly dominated by T20 and the Indian Premier League. Such a fixture would require agreement from both the England and Wales Cricket Board and India's BCCI, and Greenberg stressed it is not currently being planned, though he believes the rivalry could help arrest the decline of Test cricket's popularity on Indian soil.

The comments come as Australia and England prepare to play a one-off Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027 to mark the 150th anniversary of their first Test meeting, which will controversially be played as a day-night pink-ball match. Greenberg defended that decision despite reported unease among former Australia players, citing commercial and broadcast considerations, and said organisers are also aiming for a better pitch than the one used at the MCG during last year's Ashes, which England won inside two days. Cricket Australia is separately expanding into the Indian market by taking a Big Bash League fixture between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers to Chennai in December.
