Zach Gilford has confirmed that he will not return as serial killer Elias Voit in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 20, following the character’s final appearance in the season 19 finale. The departure closes a major storyline for the Behavioural Analysis Unit, although Gilford suggested Voit’s influence could continue to haunt Rossi and the team.

Gilford said he was sad to leave but felt Voit’s final scene, appearing as an apparition to Joe Mantegna’s Rossi, was an appropriate send-off. He said there are no current plans for a return, though he would be open to one if it felt credible; he has jokingly proposed a Suicide Squad-style spin-off and would also like to direct more episodes, having previously directed two.
