Microsoft is testing a free, advert-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming for Xbox Insiders. The limited trial could make cloud gaming more accessible for players who do not want a paid subscription, while indicating that Xbox may adopt an advertising model similar to video-streaming services.
Players can stream selected games they already own in sessions capped at one hour, with adverts shown before play begins. The option is temporary and optional for paid subscribers; Microsoft says it is intended to broaden affordable access, including for Xbox One owners wanting to play newer Series X/S titles without buying a new console, as Xbox console prices are due to rise by up to $100 from 1 August.

Xbox Cloud Gaming lets people play games over the internet, with the game running on Microsoft’s servers rather than on their own console. It is part of Microsoft’s wider Xbox business, alongside Xbox consoles, game sales and paid Game Pass subscriptions.
Microsoft is exploring whether adverts could support a lower-cost way to use cloud gaming. This could matter for people with older Xbox One consoles, as streaming may allow them to play some newer games without buying a Series X or Series S.
