The Recorded Music Industry Wants Labels on AI Music. How Could That Work? (FAQ)

Billboard · 2 months ago

Music-industry bodies have proposed a shared system for identifying songs that are fully or partly generated with artificial intelligence, responding to the rapid growth of AI material being delivered to streaming services. The initiative matters because platforms, labels and distributors have lacked consistent rules, while some listeners say AI involvement makes music less appealing and services want content providers to take greater responsibility for disclosure.

The proposal was announced by organisations including the RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, the Recording Academy, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign. Deezer says fully AI-generated tracks account for up to 50% of daily deliveries, while Apple Music has said more than a third of its monthly intake is entirely AI-generated; Suno reportedly generated 7 million songs a day in late 2025. Adoption could take months, and some industry sources fear a label for AI-assisted music may become too broad as such tools enter normal creative workflows.

  • Industry groups propose shared labels for AI-generated music.
  • AI tracks now form a large share of streaming uploads.
  • Concerns remain over tagging music merely assisted by AI.
