Netflix viewers the world over are binge-watching South African series ‘The Polygamist.’ Here’s why

NPR · 4 hours ago

Netflix’s Zulu-language South African telenovela *The Polygamist* has become an unexpected global hit, drawing viewers with its highly dramatic story of infidelity, family conflict and wealth. Its success matters because it has brought a locally rooted African production to audiences worldwide while prompting real discussion in South Africa about polygamy, women’s rights, safe sex and gender-based violence.

Set in Johannesburg, the 22-episode series follows Joyce Gomora as her wealthy businessman husband Jonasi’s secret relationships unravel their apparently perfect family life. Adapted from Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s novel, it gained more than 23 million views in its first month, reached Netflix’s top 10 in 62 countries and ranked first in almost two dozen; its mix of Zulu, English and other languages, alongside its portrayal of affluent Black South Africans, has helped broaden its appeal.
