Meta launches a storefront platform through Facebook Marketplace

Engadget ·

Meta has launched Seller, a separate app designed to give frequent Facebook Marketplace users more professional selling tools. The move could make it easier for businesses and high-volume sellers to manage listings, while potentially changing Marketplace’s more informal, community-led character and creating further revenue opportunities for Meta.

Seller synchronises with existing Marketplace listings, messages and sales history, and includes AI-generated listing details, bulk listing creation, inventory management, a unified buyer inbox and performance data. Marketplace has more than one billion monthly active users and around 430 million items listed each month worldwide; Seller is initially available to US users aged 18 and over on iOS and Android, with a web version being tested.

In short

  • Meta has introduced a professional selling app for Facebook Marketplace users.
  • Seller offers AI listings, messaging, inventory and sales analytics.
  • It is currently available only in the United States.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Providing professional sellers with dedicated tools represents a natural evolution serving genuine market demand. Small business owners and high-volume merchants gain efficiency through inventory management, automated listing generation and unified messaging, enabling them to scale operations and compete more effectively. This need not diminish casual sellers, who continue accessing the original Marketplace, whilst creating legitimate value for the growing economic ecosystem Meta has helped foster.

The case against

The introduction of a professional tier fundamentally alters Marketplace's inclusive, community-driven character. Casual sellers may face disadvantage if professional tools become necessary for visibility, whilst Meta extracts additional revenue and consolidates control over commerce. This stratification raises concerns about fair access and whether the platform's evolution serves users or primarily advances Meta's business consolidation.

Explained simply

Facebook Marketplace is a buying and selling platform built into Meta's Facebook app, where millions of people list items for sale and browse goods from others. It has become one of the world's largest online marketplaces, with over one billion monthly users and hundreds of millions of items available at any given time.

Meta has created a separate app called Seller for people who sell frequently on Marketplace. This app provides professional tools including the ability to manage stock levels, list many items at once, combine all buyer messages and sales in one place, and use artificial intelligence to help write product descriptions.

Seller represents Meta's move to expand Marketplace beyond its traditionally informal, peer-to-peer character and appeal to business sellers and trading operations. The shift could alter how the platform operates whilst creating new revenue sources for Meta from services designed specifically for professional sellers.
