Charlotte MacInnes has appealed the Federal Court of Australia’s dismissal of her defamation and breach-of-confidence case against Rebel Wilson. She is challenging findings that Wilson’s Instagram posts were not defamatory, did not seriously harm her reputation and were substantially true, and is also seeking to overturn an order requiring her to pay Wilson’s legal costs.

MacInnes, the lead actor in Wilson’s directorial debut “The Deb”, filed the appeal a day after Justice Elizabeth Raper’s ruling in Sydney. The dispute concerns four groups of posts published between September 2024 and July 2025; Raper found only one meaning was conveyed, relating to MacInnes allegedly changing her account of an uncomfortable encounter with producer Amanda Ghost, but ruled it was not defamatory. MacInnes is seeking either judgment in her favour, a new trial, or reconsideration by a different judge, while alleging errors in the judge’s interpretation of the posts, assessment of evidence and procedural fairness.
