Kratos’ Next God Of War Game Will Pick Up Where Laufey Leaves Off
Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that Kratos will lead another God of War game after the forthcoming God of War Laufey. Studio creative head Cory Barlog said the new title will build on the story established by Laufey, which centres on Kratos’s deceased wife Faye, signalling that the series will continue to explore its wider cast while retaining Kratos as a central figure.
Laufey is due to launch in February 2027, following its reveal and a 20-minute gameplay preview at June’s State of Play. No release window, setting or platform has been announced for the next Kratos-led game; the franchise is also developing a remake of the original God of War trilogy, while the spin-off Sons of Sparta launched earlier this year.
In short
- Kratos will return in a new God of War game.
- It will follow on from God of War Laufey.
- Key details remain unannounced.
Explained simply
God of War is a long-running video game franchise centred on Kratos, a warrior character who has featured since 2005. The recent games have evolved significantly, shifting from pure combat focus to explore Kratos's family relationships and a broader narrative world.
Laufey is the next God of War game launching in February 2027, focused on Faye, Kratos's deceased wife. The game represents the franchise's growing interest in exploring character backstories and the wider cast beyond just Kratos himself.
The God of War franchise is currently developing multiple projects alongside Laufey, including a remake of the original trilogy and a spin-off released earlier this year. This expansion demonstrates how the series is exploring different characters and stories within its mythology whilst maintaining Kratos as a central element.
