North-east of England receives fewest Green Flag awards
The north-east of England has received the fewest Green Flag Awards this year, with 57 parks and green spaces recognised under the national quality scheme. The result highlights regional differences in participation and recognition, although councils said lower totals do not necessarily reflect poorer maintenance because applying for awards costs money and is optional.
Yorkshire received 90 awards, the next-lowest regional total, while most regions received more than 120; the North West led with 217, two ahead of Greater London. Northumberland gained 14 awards, the most in the region, while Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and Darlington cited existing awards alongside priorities to direct resources towards maintaining parks; Newcastle also plans £1.4m of improvements.
