The International Olympic Committee has said it will not investigate FIFA president Gianni Infantino over a call from President Donald Trump concerning Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card. The decision matters because it rejects scrutiny of whether political intervention influenced FIFA’s handling of a disciplinary matter.

Balogun, a US men’s national team player, was sent off in a World Cup round-of-32 match and was initially due to miss the following round. FIFA later suspended the red card, allowing him to play, after Trump contacted Infantino about the decision.
