“Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender” returns to the original series’ central characters as young adults, with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and Zuko facing a new threat after a period of relative peace. Its creators said ageing the group up helped make the film feel like a larger, distinct continuation, while director Lauren Montgomery and the team developed a new visual approach and major action sequences for the feature.

The story follows Aang’s discovery of Sonam, a long-lost airbending Avatar whose immensely powerful staff once gave others the ability to airbend. Team Avatar learns that the anti-bending group The Denied wants the staff to disrupt the world’s fragile peace, while the ancient airbender Tagah—voiced by Dave Bautista—has his own history of violence, revenge and exile tied to Sonam and the massacre of the airbenders.
