Super Mario Galaxy 2 is hiding an unused “joyful zone” area where Mario can’t stop somersaulting, and he’s absolutely thrilled about it

A dormant feature within Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been uncovered by dedicated game researcher Supper Mario Broth: an unused "joyful zone" that dramatically transforms Mario's behaviour upon entry. When the plumber steps into this hidden area, he enters an unstoppable cycle of running and somersaulting whilst repeatedly vocalising "Yahoo!", displaying an unusually elevated state of happiness compared to his typical in-game demeanour.

The discovery was demonstrated by applying the joyful zone effect across the entire Starship Mario environment, revealing Mario in perpetual exuberant motion. The finding suggests the mechanic was likely an experimental gameplay element from early development that was ultimately excluded from the final release. Interestingly, other characters including Rosalina and the Lumas appear to be resistant to or unaffected by this latent feature.

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 contains an unused 'joyful zone' area that causes Mario to uncontrollably run and somersault whilst shouting 'Yahoo!'
  • Series archivist Supper Mario Broth discovered the hidden mechanic and demonstrated it by applying the effect across the entire Starship Mario
  • The feature appears to be an experimental mechanic that never made it into the final game; other characters remain unaffected
