York City have parted ways with manager Stuart Maynard, just three months after he led the club to the National League title and promotion back into the English Football League following a decade-long absence. The club said the decision, taken by the board, stemmed from a "difference in direction and vision" for the club, rather than any suggestion of failure on Maynard's part, and acknowledged it would appear puzzling to onlookers given his recent success.

Maynard had replaced Adam Hinshelwood in August 2025 after previously managing Notts County, and steered York to the title in dramatic fashion, drawing with rivals Rochdale via a stoppage-time equaliser to finish the season on 108 points. In its statement, the club said it believed the move would strengthen York in the long term and pointed to a "track record of improving year on year" as grounds for supporters' trust. York begin their League Two campaign with a Carabao Cup tie against Crawley Town on 3 August, followed by their opening league fixture at home to Bristol Rovers.
