Jonathan Goldstein, co-writer and co-director of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, has revealed at Comic-Con that a sequel to the 2023 film has already been written, but its future remains uncertain due to budgetary concerns. Goldstein said he and creative partner John Francis Daley were commissioned to write the follow-up but is unsure whether it will actually be produced, citing the high cost of making such films. This comes as the franchise's screen presence remains otherwise stalled, despite affection for the cast and confidence in the script.

The original film earned strong reviews, with a 91% critics' score and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but took $205 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, a return widely seen as insufficient to comfortably justify a big-budget sequel. A planned live-action D&D television series was ordered by Paramount+ in 2023 but dropped the following year; Hasbro has since revived the concept at Netflix under the title The Forgotten Realms, led by Shawn Levy and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello.
