Is Morrowind the new Doom? After getting a dual-screen port, the fan-favourite Elder Scrolls is now running in browsers

Eurogamer · 4 hours ago

A Reddit user known as Dumpster_Buddy has made The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind playable directly in a web browser, building on the open-source OpenMW engine that fans have long used to modernise the 2002 RPG. The port follows last week's news of a dual-screen version of the game for the AYN Thor handheld, underlining the enduring creativity of Morrowind's modding community even as the industry awaits fresh details on The Elder Scrolls 6.

The browser version offers a free, fully playable "example world" that needs no installation, though experiencing the full game requires pointing the site to an existing local copy of Morrowind's files. Its creator says it uses the genuine game engine rather than streaming or emulation, meaning shadows, water, saves and gamepad support all function properly, and stresses that no files are uploaded, with Chrome, Edge or Brave on desktop recommended for the best performance. The developer plans further updates, potentially including online multiplayer, though Eurogamer notes the port currently has some rough edges, such as inconsistent mouse-click registration in menus.

  • Fan-made browser port of Morrowind uses the OpenMW engine.
  • Free demo world needs no install; full game needs local files.
  • Creator plans updates, possibly including online multiplayer.
