Nancy Wilson said the rise of grunge helped save Heart emotionally and creatively after the band’s polished 1980s “hair band” image became unfashionable. Returning to Seattle connected the Wilson sisters with a new generation of musicians who regarded Heart as an influence, giving the band a renewed sense of community and authenticity.

Heart had enjoyed major MTV-era success in the late 1980s with hits including ‘These Dreams’ and ‘Alone’, but its fortunes declined when the big-hair sound fell out of favour. Wilson recalled that they became “uncool overnight”; however, support from Seattle artists such as Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell helped inspire the sisters’ return to more natural, acoustic-led music through projects including the Lovemongers.
